Ancestral Masks of the Indonesian Archipelago

This mask sculpture is inspired by profound spiritual experiences encountered through the practice of meditation. Its creation began with an offering ceremony performed as an act of reverence to the ancestors of the Indonesian Archipelago—a land shaped by generations of diverse traditions, cultural heritage, and ancestral wisdom. Within the stillness of meditation, the artist experienced a series of visionary encounters in which the faces of ancestral spirits gradually revealed themselves.

Each face manifested with a distinct expression: solemn and dignified, grinning, laughing, or fierce with anger. At certain moments, these wrathful expressions transformed into animal-like beings or hybrid figures that merged human and animal characteristics. These shifting forms symbolize the diverse energies, archetypal characters, and spiritual dimensions encountered during meditation, becoming the primary source of inspiration for this body of work.

The sculpture is handcrafted from 3 mm aluminum and meticulously formed through traditional hammer-forging techniques. The hand-worked surface and sculpted textures enhance the expressive qualities of each mask, emphasizing its unique character while reflecting the dynamic relationship between material craftsmanship and spiritual vision.
