Deer Hunter

This work is a tribute to Raden Saleh Syarif Bustaman through a contemporary reinterpretation of one of his most celebrated paintings, Deer Hunter. Recognized as the pioneer of modern Indonesian painting, Raden Saleh remains one of the most influential figures in the nation's art history, whose legacy continues to inspire generations of artists.

In this work, I incorporate discarded cigarette packages as an integral element of the visual composition. Upon their surfaces, I paint the portrait of Raden Saleh, transforming these abandoned objects into symbols of remembrance and reverence. His image serves not only as an homage to the Maestro but also as an invitation to renew the collective memory of his enduring contribution to Indonesian art. By employing materials that have been discarded, the work suggests that objects once considered devoid of value can be reimagined and endowed with renewed significance through artistic transformation.

Through this piece, I seek to encourage audiences—particularly within the visual arts community—to continue remembering, honoring, and celebrating the legacy of Raden Saleh Syarif Bustaman. It is both a reflection on cultural memory and an affirmation that artistic heritage remains alive through reinterpretation, dialogue, and contemporary practice.
